A creative and original way of confronting the so-called "Berlin School".
The enormous successes of the new electronics meant that the achievements of the creators of the trend from the 70s and 80s were forgotten. It may seem that today nobody is inspired by the rich achievements of the classics of the "Berlin School". Meanwhile, it is quite different. An example of this can be the latest album of the Remote Spaces duo, created by Konrad Jakrzewski and Krzysztof Rzeznicki - "Silos".
Both gentlemen are not new to the Polish electronic scene. Active from the beginning of the 90s, they made four albums that marked their distinctive style. Despite the slight influence of new aesthetics such as ambient or techno, throughout their activity they remained faithful to their earliest inspirations - classic electronics from the 1970s.
"Silos" is the next stage in developing the formula they have adopted. The very first composition - "Infrared Part 1" - introduces us to the atmosphere of the entire album. Slowly moving streaks of synthesizer sounds encounter cascades of rhythms emitted by electronic percussion and distant murmurs of deep bass. Similar sounds dominate the title track "Silos" and the composition ending the album “Świt w porze deszczowej” ("Dawn in the rainy season"). Pulsating synths create melodic sequences stretched over time, which are enriched with a strongly accentuated rhythm and an almost rock guitar solo (in the second recording). All this is reminiscent of the classic achievements of Tangerine Dream - the most important team of the aforementioned "Berlin School". "Arpematik Part 2", in turn, evokes the spirit of the work of Klaus Schulze - this is primarily due to the artist's characteristic rhythmic layer, which stands out in the foreground in this composition. And "Arpematik Part 1" - a spatial recording, supplemented with the sounds of the humming sea and screaming gulls, so close to the early productions of Jean Michel Jarre.
The gentlemen from Remote Spaces do not succumb to new fashions and it should be considered an advantage. The achievements of the masters of the "Berlin School" are so rich that one can still draw inspiration from them. "Silo" is an example of how it can be done in a creative and original way.
