The activity of the Krakow duo RAFAEL-DAMIAN (Rafael and Damian Kozub), twin brothers, multi-instrumentalists of "rebellious" music, dates back to the late 1970s, when, as children, they played in the company PANTOGRAF Municipal Communications Company. They founded their first group a bit later with the then bassist (and then the leader, guitarist and vocalist) of KRAKOWSKA GRUPA BLUESOWA (KGB) - Paweł "Pawka" Małysiak, but they were still quite shy. Early on, they also focused on the breakneck, long-term implementation of their musical assumptions in the privacy of their home studio - from 1982 to 1988, they registered their recording sessions and distributed on cassettes in Poland and abroad in the so-called second circulation, among others by the Krakow publishing house B.N.exp, the Piła ARS 2 and the Łańcut AML.
In 1986, encouraged by the activity of a befriended band called ZOAS, led by the then tragically deceased Jakub Smaczniak, they founded the group FRAGMENTS R-27 (eventually reduced to the final section) in Kraków, which for four years pursued spontaneous, dynamic and partly aggressive musical plans. The line-up was modified (Andrzej Jarzyna was the first drummer, Piotr Nodzen was the second bassist, and Dariusz "Darecki" Kaszubski played bongos), but the main part has always remained the same: RAFAEL (keyboards and percussion instruments, vocals, compositions), DAMIAN (drums, vocals, piano, compositions), Rafał "Walek" Walczowski (bass), Piotr "Buzer" Łabuzek (trumpet, vocals, synthesizer) and Paweł "Rudy" Ochel (guitar, vocals).
With this controversial band, the brothers gave many concerts in their native Krakow (in the club, and then in the Podwawelski cinema, twice in the Nowa Huta Cultural Center, in the Wola Zoo club, or in Dworek Białoprądnicki, etc.) and took part in several larger travel campaigns: Skawina - "ODK" club, Katowice - "Akant" student club at the Festiwal Muzyki Odjazdowej, Rzeszów - "O To Chodzi" club, Warsaw - "Remont", Warsaw - "Marchewka" Festival in the Riviera (here together with composer Zbigniew A. Lampart , the then music director of the Ludwik Solski Theater in Tarnów). They also have numerous private cassette releases with this group.
The distrust with which the audience accepted these spontaneous performances (eg power off during the Katowice festival review at the Akant club), however having nothing to do with post-punk culture and misunderstanding, resulted in the abandonment of further trips and random concerts. Eventually, RAFAEL disbanded the group in November 1989.
In addition to cassette publications, the brothers are also responsible for numerous brochures and newspapers about rebellious music, including ALTER fanzine, edited together with Robert Kramaić, and columns used by Henryk Palczewski in his ARS 2 Guide.
In 1988, there was a publishing cooperation with Mariusz Błachowicz, and in mid-1989, a meeting with musicians from the Dębica scene: Ireneusz Socha, Arkadiusz Franczyk and Andrzej Kramarz (KIRKUT-KONCEPT and FOR EXAMPLE), which resulted in a joint recording session in October, published under the title " Yesterday's Dream ”.
After emigration, the brothers focused again on solo work. After settling permanently in North Rhine-Westphalia, they realized music projects until the end of the 90s (especially Damian (www.kozub.de) wrote down a lot alone then, even until 2007), released on cassettes or CDs but unfortunately, the attempt to form a new, hopeful band with Peter Sohn from Wuppertal was unsuccessful.
